Pro-Gay Archbishop Candidate
28 Jun 2002
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, who has angered many in the gay and lesbian community because of his attitude towards homosexuality, is due to retire in October.
His likely successor, the Archbishop of Wales Rowan Williams, is a known supporter of the ordination of gay clergy. The possible selection of the Dr Williams has been described as a ‘disaster for Anglicans’
Rev David Holloway recently voiced his concerns over the possible selection.
“Rowan Williams would be a disaster because the two most pressing areas for the Church now are moral issues and multi-faith issues. In Rowan Williams you have a man who has admitted ordaining a priest he knew to have a homosexual partner, and you have a bishop who is on record as saying that `conforming your life to Christ doesn`t necessarily mean giving up a homosexual lifestyle`."
Mr Holloway went on to add that Anglicans based their abhorrence of homosexuality on Biblical teaching and failing to do so would lead to the "deconstruction of the Christian sexual ethic, which is there to support the married family".
Mr Holloway and his supporters are believed to have sent an open letter to Downing Street voicing their opposition to the appointment of Dr Williams.
